The practice of an Annual Report on Corporate Sustainability (CS) at Tata Motors was started in 2005-06. The 2005-06 Report was an attempt to familiarise its readers with the ethos, processes and results of CS activities at Tata Motors.
The theme of the CS Annual Report 2006-07 is 'Building Social Capital'. While detailing the impact of company’s CS in 2006-07, it also presents a comprehensive business case for investing in CS.
The Report covers the impact of various CS programmes carried out at the project areas around the manufacturing units and at non-plant locations. CS activities were initiated at Singur even before the construction began and an overview of these initiatives and the proposed plan for the current financial year has been included. In addition, the Report also enumerates the various partnerships of the company with civil society and industry to champion the cause.
This year we have introduced a new section, “Soul Curry”. It covers the musings of some of the beneficiaries of our CS activities, those who have not been mere recipients but have partnered with the company to make a difference in not only their own lives but in their communities as well.
Employees are the backbone of the company and several efforts are made to engage them. These activities elicit their and their family member’s enthusiasm and participation. The Report briefly summarises such activities too.
Tata Motors recognises the learning opportunities and the sense of self-fulfillment that volunteering induces and therefore encourages it among employees. Hundreds of colleagues across locations volunteer their time for community development activities and the report highlights their contributions in yet another new section, “Lead Kindly Light”.
‘Building Social Capital’ is an attempt to outline the company’s contribution to social development in a reader-friendly format, using pictorial representation wherever possible. We hope you will find it useful.
