The foundation of Tata Motors’ growth over the last 70 years is a deep understanding of economic stimuli and customer needs, and the ability to translate them into customer-desired offerings through cutting edge technologies. Innovation is deeply embedded in our DNA, and is demonstrated through our path-breaking vehicles -- from India’s first fully indigenous passenger car, the Indica, to the Nano, the Zest, the Bolt, and now the new generation range – Tiago, Hexa and Tigor. Our vast range of light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles, on the Cargo transportation side includes the globally benchmarked Prima, Signa and Ultra trucks in the M &HCV segment, the Xenon Yodha in the pick-up range and the segment-redefining Tata Ace platform. In passenger transportation, Tata Motors has unleashed the future of mass public transportation by launching the STARBUS ELECTRIC 9m, the STARBUS ELECTRIC 12m and the STARBUS HYBRID 12m buses.
To meet the current and future passenger transportation needs of Smart Cities, Tata Motors displayed a range of Smart Buses for Clean and Green cities, which are designed, developed and powered by alternate fuels.

Developed indigenously, these buses are safe and comfortable and are economically viable ‘MADE IN INDIA’ solutions. Tata Motors’ aim is to not only comply with emerging regulations of clean and green emission but also to be ahead of people’s requirements. The company has consistently been developing and manufacturing products that can contribute to CO2 reductions across all road transport segments and also conducts early investments in new technologies.
The company today has R&D and design centres in Pune (India), South Korea, Italy and the UK. We have over 4,500 engineers, scientists and technicians making path-breaking innovations that are driving the form and performance of future vehicles.
Our focus is on current and future auto technologies that enhance the look, feel and driving experience for our customers. Our new age concept cars and award-winning engines are examples of how far our innovative culture has taken us. From frugal engineering to our work on vehicles, powered by alternative fuels, our innovation thrust forms one of the pillars of a business built on sustainability.
Our latest innovations are India’s first turbo-charged multi-point fuel injection (MPFI) petrol engine, the Revotron1.2T engine and the Diesel engine, the Revotorq, which power the new generation cars - Tiago, Tigor, Zest and Bolt. The award-winning Revotron and Revotorq series have been designed to offer an optimum mix of fuel economy, performance and refinement. Also on the anvil are 3- and 4- cylinder petrol engines.
Multi drive mode is one of the key innovations in the MPFI engine. This feature allows the driver to switch between ‘Sport’, ‘Eco’ and ‘City’ modes for varied levels of driving experience. Other top-end features include the new F-Tronic Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) for finger-shift and clutch-free driving, and the electronic power assist system (ePAS) for power steering.
Tata Motors is the first OEM to have introduced EGR technology in India in 2010 for BS IV on commercial vehicles. EGR introduced in 2010, has been developed in-house and covers the entire range of Tata engines including the new generation 3-litre and 5-litre engines. Tata Motors then created new benchmark with SCR technology in 2014 for M&HCV Truck and bus applications on Tata Cummins engines. SCR offers cleaner exhaust; better power and fuel efficiency. It is the globally proven technology for all Euro 4 and above applications for the entire range of M&HCV, in both emerging as well as developed markets such as the U.S. & Europe. SCR will enable Tata Motors to meet stringent BS VI emission norms.
Taking a step further in developing comfortable mass transportation solutions, Tata Motors has also launched AMT technology (Automated Manual Transmission) in its Starbus and Ultra brand of buses, ranging from 12 m and 9m, developed especially for city applications with heavy traffic.
The Tata AMT buses come with Manual and Automatic with Economy and Power modes. In power mode, the Automatic Gear Detection (AGD) emphasizes sufficient engine torque capability, to maintain agility and drivability even in case of demanding duty cycles, while the economy mode ensures optimal fuel consumption.
The AMT technology of the bus coupled with a powerful new generation engine, automatically engages the vehicle’s clutch and shifts the gear. It also considers the driver’s operation, engine torque, vehicle load and road inclination, resulting in optimized gear shifting and hassle -free driving experience.
At Tata Motors, design is not only about new surfaces, beautiful colours, materials and finish, but also about creating compelling products that offer the latest technology-rich features and high performance. In keeping with its transformation journey, we have introduced new IMPACT Design language for our passenger vehicles. Our design teams based in UK, Turin and India have created an all-new design language that is demonstrated in the new launches. The dynamic Tiago hatchback was the first new product launched with this design language, followed by the Lifestyle SUV, Tata HEXA and the recently launched, India’s first Styleback – Tata Tigor. The IMPACT Design forms the over-arching design brand which stands for ‘Immediate IMPACT at first sight. Lasting IMPACT over time.’
IMPACT Design further distills the design elements that can be expected from all Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles. It will be achieved through key design elements on the Exterior and Interior.
The Exteriors design will be defined through ‘EXciting’, ‘EXpressive’ and ‘EXtraordinary’ features:
The Interior of the vehicle will be defined through ‘INviting’, ‘INtelligent’ and ‘INtouch’ features.

Incubating Centre of Innovation
As a core element of its transformation journey ‘FutuReady’, Tata Motors has rolled out its new Passenger Vehicle strategy and introduced its new sub-brand - TAMO.
TAMO will act as an incubating center of innovation towards new technologies, business models and partnerships in order to define future mobility solutions. It will operate as an agile, ring-fenced vertical, in the first step on a low volume, low investment model to provide fast tracked proves of technologies and concepts. It will act as an open platform to network with global startups and leading tech companies, to get access to trends, innovations and solutions, for the design of exciting future products and services. Tata Motors recently set up an innovation hub in close proximity to the Silicon Valley.
For the rapidly changing automotive environment, TAMO will transform the experience of interfacing and interacting with customers and the wider community. It will provide a digital eco-system, which will be leveraged by Tata Motors to support the mainstream business in the future.
The idea is to find new and agile ways of innovating and experimenting. Tata Motors’ success in this new mobility world will be contingent to our ability to network globally and to partner with new thought leaders. Focus will be to scout for new technologies, to explore opportunities at the innovation hubs across the globe, and to work with start-ups in the new spaces. Since this requires a different way of thinking, Tata Motors will apply within TAMO also, new ways of working because leadership is all about time to market.
The introduction of TAMO will help Tata Motors co-design India's automotive footprint by taking new technologies and mobility concepts as a new ecosystem to market. The first product developed by TAMO - RACEMO was showcased at 87th Geneva International Motor Show. To know more click here.
